Marion Brennan
I am a South African fine artist, now living in New Zealand. I specialise in the mediums of Scratch board and oil painting. I use my love of nature and humanity to depict my thoughts and emotions in my art work. Many of my existing art works are available for purchase (as originals and/or prints), and I am also available to do commissions.
What is Scratchboarding?
Scratchboarding is like sculpting in 2D. The technique requires use of a specialised ‘Scratchboard’, which is a clay board usually covered in black ink. To create an image, the artist uses a variety of sharp tools to make small intricate scratch marks on the surface of the board. These scratch marks remove the black ink and expose the white clay underneath, this may then be coloured with ink. The work is extremely detailed, requiring many 'layers' of scratching. Depending on size, intricacy and colour, each piece can take up to 100 hours to complete.
